Letter from CRF’s Board Chair 4/15/14

Greetings:

As the saying goes, “You’ve got to be tough to row in Cleveland.”  Today, April 15, the air temperature is 30 degrees, water temperature is 33 degrees, wind is at 21 mph, and a heavy, wet snow is falling.  The Scholastic and Collegiate teams have been rowing for several weeks, so kudos to the students and coaching staff for their drive and stamina (although some of us could use different words to describe this behavior).  Several teams have purchased new boats and others have buffed up their current fleet.  Either way, it is great to see such support and enthusiasm for the sport of rowing.  Cleveland Rowing Foundation will be erecting a temporary boat storage building to house mostly singles as we continue to make way for growth.  In addition, CRF will be purchasing a couple of lifts in order to make it easier and more efficient for teams to get their boats down from the upper racks.

Our partner, the Metroparks, continues to make improvements to the grounds. The all-purpose trail will soon be traversing Rivergate Park and new lighting is being installed.  In addition, the City of Cleveland is going forward with its plans to build the Crooked River Skate Park which will be located north of the Metroparks building (formerly known as the Crab Shack).  Rivergate Foundation is working diligently with other stakeholders to secure land and finances for future expansion.  There have been improvements to the erg room and upstairs offices while we continue to plan for enhanced shower/bathroom facilities.  A security system is being installed and improvements to the building roof and docks are imminent.

Adult and young adult rowers are looking forward to a fabulous spring and summer season.  Periodically check the CRF website for information on Learn-To-Row sessions, River Sweep, regattas, clinics, and other fun-filled rowing-related activities.

Thanks to the board, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts as we all work toward making Cleveland a fabulous place to live and row.  And a special welcome to all visitors and guests to the boathouse.  Hope to see you on the water!

Thank you,
